Here are some matte paintings I did for the film 'Robin Hood'. MPC did a large amount of the VFX work on the film, most of which was done for the battle sequence at the end. I was involved in creating a number of paintings of the cliffs for that sequence. A 3D master scene was created and used as the basis of the location and angle of the cliff in various shots. The matte paintings were then projected onto the geometry. All images are copyright Universal Studios

Here is some work I did a while back for a company called Supermassive games. I was creating concept art for a new game called Tumble that has just come out with the Sony Motion Controller. I worked on the early development for the game so it looks a bit different now. I've got some more stuff somewhere that I'll try and dig out. The idea for the game was to stack blocks in various ways, with the blocks providing some kind of interaction as you played with them.

I've decided to do a colour scrip and to start developing some feature animation based work (thanks to the students at AIB for the inspiration!) At the moment I have no real story which isn't a great start, but I have a idea about a forest fire. No furry animals or talking squirrels but a story about nature. These quick studies are just three frames from the sequence that will serve as starting point for development, I want there to be a clear distinction in colour, composition and mood to each section. Over the next few days/weeks I will try and stay disciplined and keep this going.

I've been learning Nuke in a bit more depth over the past few days and have set up a DMP to test the work flow for multiple projections. The bottom image gave me a starting point and the rest was put together from various photo's I took in Devon. I'm in the process of putting a camera move on this and will post it when I've fixed all the little problems. Nuke is amazing, really easy to use and is really efficient so hopefully we'll use it more on the next production.

Its been insanely busy at work doing lots of DMP for the new Robin Hood film, but today I actually had some down time. All the work I've been doing has been great fun, but its all been manipulating photos and creating projections, not much actual painting with brushes to speak of. This afternoon I was stitching some of my sky ref together and I thought I'd paint an extension. Its done for no other reason than for the fun of painting. The photo did all the work, but it was just great to have the time to do some painting. Next step real paint! ....if I can remember to work a brush.

I've started the final version of this matte and unusually for me I've started by braving some CG! I had such a battle with the buildings on the city matte I thought it would make life easier to do a basic model of the temple in 3D to give myself a framework to start on. I also downloaded a trail of Mudbox and sculpted the mountain with that - what a great piece of software, really nice and easy to use! There's a long way to go, but I'm glad the ball is rolling

I've now broken this shot up and projection mapped it in Maya with a camera move. I've been using Nuke recently, its amazing - really fast to use, I set a projection camera move in that too, but the trail version of the software limits the output so the final is from Maya.

Heres the rough start of the next matte, the previous one is still being tweeked, but I wanted to get started on something fresh. They'll be a pan from left to right hence the slightly odd composition when seen as a whole. I'm going to put some ruins of some kind onto the mountain, but for today this has given me a rough idea of composition and colour as well as getting the basic references in.

New update for the matte painting. I've made the canvas wider so I can incorporate a camera move and started working into the detail. All the little dots and the ship in the foreground will be animated once the matte is finished.

They sky was doing interesting things today so I decided to sketch the clouds into photoshop. Its more a composition of clouds as they didn't stay still!! Also this is the first time I've painted something from life into photoshop, I've never bothered before as I prefer natural media. It wasn't too bad though, I found it quite hard to get the tone and colour right - they seemed to exist right at the top most edge of the colour selector, but once I got used to it it was ok. I might try and do them more often.

I'm doing a Matte painting course on www.cgtalk.com at the moment. It lasts 8 weeks, the tasks for this week is to come up with the concept for the Matte we will be working on over the duration of the course. I wanted to do something where I could gather reference locally and am basing the story on Celtic Mythology. These are some quick colour key thumbnails exploring some ideas I've had. The story is based around a voyage through a series of islands. I want to do something at dawn, using lots of fog. Early day!!

Back to sketching - I haven't done this for a while! It was nice to be back out and drawing. I only got a couple of drawings done. I spent a long time wandering around - it was ultra busy because of half-term so it was hard to find somewhere to hideaway!

I've also decided I would like to paint into photoshop in a similar way I would paint with oils. I did this quick sketch just to see what it was like - it was more fun than I was expecting. I kept the brush to 100% opacity and just thought about tone and colour. I tended not to use glazes when painting - I prefer the direct method. No soft blending, just finding the tone in the middle and putting that down (I think this is much harder when painting from life, so its a bit of a cheat here). I'll call it 'Grumpy Face', whenever I paint faces from my head they turn out this way - probably due to a lack of study of expression! Maybe I'll put that on the list of things to do too, paint faces form imagination that have a more interesting expression. Anyway as an exercise it was quite enjoyable and something I'm going to continue with.

I'm now on a mission to learn photoshop. I didn't realise how little I knew, so I've bought some DVDs and I'm going to learn it inside out. Today's lesson was to paint with masks. I used selection masks and quick masks to block in the forms, these are rough images, concepts rather than Matte's of any kind. I hope to post at least one image a day now and I'll try and cover what I've learnt. I'm also trying to speed up and time my self, these took a couple of hours each.

More flower I'm afraid. They offer a great chance to study tone and colour so I'm trying to do at least one set up a week. This one has a bit more work to do tomorrow, just to get the accents in. Its tricky to keep the colour clean, you really have to be disciplined with your palette. For those who are interested in paint: I started this painting with my normal palette of Black, Ultramarine, Burnt umber, Cadmium Red, Yellow Ochre and White. I ended up adding Cadmium Yellow and Alizarin Crimson to get the colours I needed.

I've painted this cast before, but I like it so I thought I would give it another shot! The first session was spent blocking in the form, trying to get the tones right and working the basics of the background. The second day I worked into the middle tones a little more to refine the modeling and the lower part of the cast. The third session was similar, I was trying to get a balance in detail and form, I don't want to describe every tiny detail but to create an impression. Finally the background was finished, it is in fact a patterned cloth, I don't want people to focus on the detail in the cloth and miss the cast so it was a question of trying to find the right balance.

This is the final and sequence for the nude study. I managed to get quite a lot down on the first day, the second session was spent working on the edges and building up the lights. In the final session I noticed the leg was way to long so had to fix that, then I spent some time balancing the image to get the focus in the right place.

Haven't updated for a while. Here are a few projects I've been working on. The two flower paintings were a bit rushed, the flowers died within a couple of hours!! I think next time I'm going to try and get more contrast, I was struggling to get the tone right on these. More colour next time I think!

Here's a painting of the interior of Chelsea church and the start of a road just around the corner. I made a bit of a school boy error and ran out of paint so couldn't finish it :( I might go back if the weather holds. Its also got a few bugs and twigs stuck to it as it keep falling over, all a part of landscape painting. I really need to start using more paint and expanding my brushwork on these smaller studies. The interior of the church looks a bit clunky in places and I think some smaller brushed might help add variation. Sargent is one of my favorite painters, a master of tone and edges. He's most well known for his society portraits, but his range is a lot greater than that. On the subject of painters I like and if you like Sargent, look up Zorn too. He's an outstanding painter. Up there with Sargent in terms of handling tone, but a bit looser in style. Here are a few studies. This first is a sketch done this afternoon of the girls painting in the studio, a real challenge as they didn't stand still! The nude is a start done this morning, we will paint this pose again. I want to work into the shadow shapes, somethings not right at the moment and also continue playing around with the edges, both internal and external also the colour needs cleaning up a bit. Finally a cast study, I struggled with the face on this one, I think the version here is the 3rd or 4th version.

Here's the finished nude study I started the other day. It's only 8" x 10" so I was happy to leave it as finished at this stage. I think the danger with small painting's is that they can be easily overworked. The largest changes were made in the second sitting where the shoulders were completely re-drawn, as I her head looked as though it was sitting too low. Today I tried to unify the background and work the accents into the painting.

I did this oil sketch of a cast this morning. It started out as an excuse to use up the colour's on my palette as I'm a cheap skate and didn't want to waste the paint! The colour's used were: Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber, Naples Yellow and White. It was an enjoyable exercise and I'd been thinking about doing a limited palette painting for a while - I think I'll try in on a figure sketch next. It's interesting reading about other artists palettes: Zorn, Velazquez, Rembrandt and Sargent all used a pretty limited set of colours for a lot of their work. I think it helps the sense of harmony in the picture, its seems in the paintings that I like the most less is often more. I've also been reading a lot of Richard Schmidt - an amazing contemporary painter and well worth checking out if you don't know him. He's an amazing figure painter and a real inspiration.

Here's a pastel I've done recently, it's pretty much my first go with pastels so was a really steep learning curve. It also explains why the technique I've used isn't very exciting, I wasn't brave enough! I really love some of the pastel work I've seen about. Degas of course springs to mind whenever pastels are mentioned and I recently bought an amazing book on his work. I also found a section on Craig Mullin's (of http://www.goodbrush.com/ fame) with some pretty cool stuff, there seems to be no medium that he can't use brilliantly! I've also put on the start of a nude study. I'm enjoying doing some smaller pieces at the moment along the lines of the studio sketch I posted previously. The background isn't as dark as it seems in this image, I got some annoying glare when taking the photo so had to knock it back in photoshop.

This is the final update for this painting as it was the last sitting today. I would have liked some more time to work into the face and edges, but overall I enjoyed painting it. The face seems a bit bleached out, but was taken on my mobile. I had to adjust the skin tones quite a lot as they were too red in the last one.

The colour side of this study still needs some work, this is a really tough thing to do. The darks on the red are still to light and the edges need some work. Ideally the two images would match up tonally if they were in black and white, not quite there yet, but hopefully when I have made the changes next week things will be a little closer.

Here's a study that I completed today. The idea was to study tone in relation to colour. So I completed the tone study first trying to analyze the relationship between the different masses. This is harder than it sounds. When drawing we used the top and bottom line of the proportion box as fixed lines, this way there is always something to refer back too. With tone you have to try and study the whole tone not small chunks (the same as drawing in fact) as the tone (and colour) in isolation will look different than when viewed within the context of the composition. Its not easy to stop yourself getting bogged down in one section, so I ended up adjusting a particular area only to find that I would then have to correct another in relation to it! Towards the end I took a photo in black and white to compare to the set-up. A few bits were out but it wasn't too far off. The painting is also a little tighter than I would normally paint. I chose to keep any expressive brush-work and looseness out of this study so I could just focus on the exercise. The only problem is the yellow cup is a little wonky.....actually they all seem to be a bit....I'll blame the camera or something.

Here's a nude study and start on a portrait. The nude study was a bit different than my normal approach, I didn't have much time so really just went for the simple masses and shadow shapes. The portrait is of the same guy who is pictured below with the sax. Unfortunately Im in the same position again and its not ideal. Its pretty much a profile shot, but with a tiny bit of rotation on the head, very tricky to get, but I'll see how it goes. It'll be good practice anyway.

Here's an update to the portrait that is shown in the first sitting a few posts back. I enjoyed the session a lot and managed to get quite a bit done. The eyes were a real problem though, I'd done them too small and they had to be reworked. Accents and finishing off to be done in the next sitting. We also did an hour and half nude study this morning. I could have done with a little more time to finish off the portrait, her nose is a little large in my drawing!

I finished this drawing today. I had to completely re-draw the legs, but the proportion problems are a little less severe now. I worked a little more into the head and then just spent the rest of the time adjusting the tone so the focus of the picture was in the right place.....not a great photo but here it is anyway:

Here's a figure study from today, Im not to sure about this one, its a bit fussy. It was a 20 minute pose and a made an error in drawing it too small. I should have corrected it and paid the price with a fiddley drawing. I think I am going to try and be a little bolder with my tone in the next one.

Here's another demo of the various aspects of a still life. This was not really about the application of the paint itself (thick/thin/brush marks etc) so I chose to paint the first three with just burnt umber and the last adding only black and white. The lights in the first couple of stages were obtained by wiping back the paint. The top left shows the line worked used to place the proportion. Next is an example of blocking in the tone. The third deals with edges and finally a combination of them all with the highlights added and the value range expanded with the use of white and black.

Todays update: I've worked a little more on the Saxophone portrait. I added the legs, but I've got some proportion problems that need sorting out! the torso has got a little too long and the legs need fixing (I think this is because I added them on today, rather than working them into the original line drawing). I'm going to try next time, but I really want to get a painting going on this one too. The photo shows the studio setup. The nude sketch was a 3 hour study and the still life drawing shows the process I am following, line, tone, edges and then accents.

Here are some figure drawings and other bits and pieces. The nude studies were 10 mins for the back and 20 for the (sadly) headless pose. I had drawn the head to big, rubbed it out and then before I could re-draw it a delivery arrived and I missed the end of the pose :( The male standing nude was drawn from a cast. The original is a sculpture done by Scott who runs the studio. The portrait with the sax is the result after the first sitting. I was really struggling with the edge of the head. It really doesn't look right at the moment and needs re-working. I would also like to soften the features a bit. Anyway.....here they are.

Here are a couple of things from today. I did the nude sketch this morning, it was a 15 min pose. We're doing a lot of short figure studies at the moment. Its something I really enjoy, I was trying to stay focused on gesture and proportion. The painting is a start for a portrait we did this afternoon. Quite rusty after Crimbo break! I need to have a good long look at this before next weeks sitting to figure out where all the mistakes are. I might do an annotated photoshop file to show what Im going to work on in the next sitting. If I do I'll post it up.

A bit slow with the updates this year! we just moved to a new flat so I've been a bit busy. Here is some work that was done before Christmas, the nude back was done in around three hours hence its sketchy nature and the Seneca took a couple of sessions. I haven't done any painting yet this term, but I have started a portrait drawing so I will post some work in progress pics of that soon.

Here's a cast drawing I finished today. Its charcoal and chalk on grey paper. I still don't really know what direction I want to take my drawings, but at least they are becoming more consistant. I can now say that the last few look like they have been drawn by the same person!

Here are some updates: The portrait or Aaron is now into the third sitting, I had to move the mouth across and make some pretty big changes in this sitting. I bought the orchid today, a really nice plant as plants go, very good to draw and paint! The nude was charcoal on grey paper, rubbing out the charcoal to get the lights.

Here are some updates, Rufus (in the yelow top) came for the final sitting. I reworked a lot of the face, but too much into the shadows so now his chin looks a little strange. Typically I only saw this when I took the photo! Jess also sat again, I still want to work on this one again but I'm happy with the way its coming on. Luke also came back and this time I drew him on grey paper with charcoal. I included his hands to add a bit of interest, they're too large, but as we only had one sitting I decided to leave them.

Here are a few portrait updates:
Luke is now finished, the last session was spent working into the shirt, refining the face and darkening the background....I also had to move the whole ear in the last 20 mins as I spotted it wasn't in the right place!
The second portrait is on its 2nd session, I really need to work into the eyes next time as its looking a little strange at the moment. Crazy lighting.
